How to Play Blackjack

If you are interested in playing blackjack and you have no absolutely idea on how to get started then this guide is of great importance. Blackjack is a simple game to play and it can be learnt in a few minutes but in order for you to adopt a winning strategy the game has got to be played most often. Blackjack is a game of skill if you need to win effectively but some people tend to think that the game is based on chance. In order for you to win effectively in blackjack you certainly need to make use of math, strategy and skill. In this guide I will focus mainly on how the game is played.

Blackjack can be played by 1 or more decks and this also depends on the variation you are playing. The rules of the game are similar for all variations and the differences are minor.

Cards of rank 2 to 10 are calculated at their face value and the rest of the high cards have a value of 10 with the exception of an Ace which can have a value of 1 or 11. The ace is the highest card value in blackjack and it is the card which constructs a blackjack (2 cards, Ace & Ten) – Total 21. Thi9s is one of the main reasons why the game is called 21. If a player or a dealer goes above 21 s/he is called a bust hand and automatically loses. If both the dealer and players bust the house is given the advantage and if both make a tie this is known as a push.

The Game Proceeds

Each player is dealt with two cards all face-up and the dealer gets two cards at which one is face-up and the other face-down (not exposed). The main theme of the game is for players to beat the dealer’s hand. If the dealer has an Ace s/he will automatically check his or her hand whether it is a blackjack-total 21 and all the players will lose if the dealer has a blackjack only with the exception of other players who would have got a blackjack at which this would be a push. If the dealer’s card is not an ace then betting ensures and each player is given a turn to place his or her bet.

Betting In Blackjack

Depending on the variation being played, each player is given the following betting options:

Stand – If a player is content that his or her hand will win – he can opt to stand – meaning the players wishes to take no card from the deck.

Hit – If a play is not satisfied with his hand he can opt for additional cards from the deck so as to strengthen his hand without hitting above 21.

Insurance – This is an option which is only given to all players in the event that the dealer’s face up card is an Ace and you are then given a chance to predict whether it is a blackjack or not.
Double Down – This is when a player feels to obtain just a single card from the deck and also get the chance to double his or her bet.

Split – If the player’s first two cards are identical s/he is able to split it in to two hands or more. Hence, this is the only time when players get to play with more than one hand on the blackjack table.

Surrender – This is when a player tends to think that his or her hand will not beat the dealer’s hand and is given the option to resign or fold his or her hand and half of the total amount wagered is forfeited by the house.

Blackjack is all about the player’s hand beating the dealer’s hand.
